At a Glance: Canon PG-260/CL-261 Ink Cartridges

There are two cartridges in the PG-260/CL-261 cartridge series: a black one and a tri-color one. The cartridges are available in two sizes: standard yield and high yield, as well as an XL size. The pigment-based ink used in the Canon PG-260 black ink cartridge dries faster and is smudge-resistant. The Canon CL-261 tri-color cartridge ink contains all three hues (cyan, magenta, and yellow) and is dye-based, so it takes longer to dry.

How long does Canon PG-260/CL-261 ink last?

The regular-yield black Canon PG-260 cartridge prints around 180 pages.

  • The Canon CL-261 tri-color cartridge has a standard yield of 180 pages.
  • About 400 pages are printed with the Canon PG-260XL high-yield black cartridge.
  • About 300 pages can be printed with the Canon CL-261XL tri-color cartridge.

The estimated cartridge page yield is based on 5% page coverage, or prints with ink covering 5% of the page. In other words, if you only print on 5% of the page, you will get the full-page yield. You should expect the page count to reduce if you print half-to-full pages, full-color pages, or photographs. We recommend printing at least once every couple of weeks for optimal results. This keeps your cartridges primed, extending their life and reducing the frequency of cleanings, which can quickly deplete your ink supply if done frequently.

What’s the difference between Canon PG-260/CL-261 ink and Canon PG-260XL/CL-261XL ink?

The volume of ink within the PG-260/CL-261 normal yield and PG-260XL/CL-261XL ink cartridges is the key difference. The XL cartridges are the same size as the standard cartridges and install in your printer in the same way, but they hold extra ink. If you choose, you can print with two different cartridge sizes inserted (a PG-260XL high-yield black cartridge, for example, will work alongside a CL-261 standard-yield color). If you frequently print, however, we recommend going with the high-yield cartridges because the standard-yield cartridges do not hold as much ink. With the XL, you not only get more prints, but your operational costs are also lower.

Although standard-yield cartridges are less expensive, when cost per page is considered, high-yield cartridges provide greater long-term value. Take, for example, the PG-260 black regular yield and PG-260XL high-yield cartridges. The standard-yield PG-260 costs $17.99* and has a page yield of 180.The PG-260XL model costs $31.99 and can print 400 pages. Simply divide the price by the number of pages to get the cost per page.

Install the Canon PG-260 and CL-261 ink cartridges by following the steps below.

Step 1: Remove the orange tape from the side of the cartridge. This will reveal the vent hole, through which it can communicate with the printer.

Step 2: Avoid touching the golden points while handling the cartridges. These golden contact points are delicate and, if not handled properly, could damage the cartridge. When using the printer to print, fingerprints on these golden points can cause an error message.

Step 3: Open the printer lid and wait for the cartridges to position themselves. Then, to remove the cartridge, raise the grey lock and take it out. Keep in mind that the latch with the letter B is for the black cartridge, while the latch with the letter C is for the tri-color or colored cartridge. Any changeover would result in the destruction of both cartridges, so proceed with caution.

Step 4: Insert the cartridge and secure it by pulling down the lock.

Step 5: The printer will take a few minutes to initialize before you can begin printing.

Conclusions

Both cartridges contain the same amount of ink and are installed in the same manner. The only difference between a regular and an XL cartridge is the amount. If you print frequently, high-yield cartridges are preferable because they can be utilized for longer periods of time.

Furthermore, if you just print once in a while, you can use the normal cartridge, but be sure to print at least once a week to preserve the ink in good condition.
